(PPAR-
) nuclear receptor that controls the expression of many genes involved in energy metabolism. Recently, in vitro and animal studies have implicated this class of nuclear receptors in the inflammatory response, although the applicability of these findings to humans remains unclear. In this issue, Marx and colleagues have advanced our knowledge of TZDs on human inflammation. Using restenosis as a model, they investigated the efficacy of TZDs on the response to arterial injury in a nondiabetic population. They provide clear evidence of an antiinflammatory effect that is independent of glucose control. See p 2792.
