Each award consists of a $2000 stipend and the obligation of the winner to submit an abstract of his or her work for review by a special review committee. A $1000 prize is awarded for the best Student Scholar abstract for the year.
Fifty-one applications were received from 40 medical schools. The quality of the applications was exceptional. The top-eight-ranked students from separate institutions accepting awards were Karl Orth, Medical College of Wisconsin; Albert Kim, Massachusetts General Hospital; Katherine Jue, University of Mississippi Medical Center; Ming Jih, USC School of Medicine; John Dalton IV, Emory University, Atlanta, Ga; Bryan Burns, Albert Einstein College of Medicine; C. Andrew Schroeder, Jr, New York Medical College; and Edward Garmey, Mount Sinai Medical Center.
