*    Introduction

The AHA Student Scholars in Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke program, an initiative developed by the Council on the Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease and approved by the Council Affairs Committee in June 1995, announced awards to eight Student Scholars, with the Kidney Council granting support for 7 and the Thrombosis Council for 1 of the awards.

Each award consists of a $2000 stipend and the obligation of the winner to submit an abstract of his or her work for review by a special review committee. A $1000 prize is awarded for the best Student Scholar abstract for the year.

Fifty-one applications were received from 40 medical schools. The quality of the applications was exceptional. The top-eight-ranked students from separate institutions accepting awards were Karl Orth, Medical College of Wisconsin; Albert Kim, Massachusetts General Hospital; Katherine Jue, University of Mississippi Medical Center; Ming Jih, USC School of Medicine; John Dalton IV, Emory University, Atlanta, Ga; Bryan Burns, Albert Einstein College of Medicine; C. Andrew Schroeder, Jr, New York Medical College; and Edward Garmey, Mount Sinai Medical Center.
