At the recent American Heart Association 68th Scientific Sessions in Anaheim, California, November 13 to 16, 1995, the Scientific Councils' distinguished lectureships, awards, and Young Investigator competitions continued their annual tradition of excellence, illustrating the summit of clinical and basic science research in cardiovascular medicine.

The Louis N. Katz Basic Science Research Prize for Young Investigators, sponsored by the Council on Basic Science, was renamed this year in honor of both Louis N. and Arnold M. Katz, highlighting the continuity between generations of cardiovascular investigators through recognition of this remarkable father-son pair. Finalists for the award were Michael Kalafatis, University of Vermont, Burlington, for "A Biochemical Mechanism for Familial Thrombosis"; Jun-ichi Sadoshima (winner), University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, for "The Heteromeric Gq Protein–Coupled Angiotensin II Receptor Activates p21ras via the Src Family Tyrosine Kinase–Shc-Grb2-Sos Pathway in Cardiac Myocytes"; Margaret Schwarz, Columbia University, New York, NY, for "Endothelial-Monocyte Activating Polypeptide (EMAP) II, a Novel Antiangiogenic Protein, Suppresses Tumor Growth and Induces Apoptosis in Growing Endothelial Cells"; Didier Y.R. Stainier, University of California, San Francisco, for "cloche, a Zebrafish Gene Required for Endocardial Cell Formation"; and Henry M. Sucov, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, for "Outflow Tract and Aortic Arch Malformations in Retinoic Acid Receptor Double-Mutant Embryos Implicate a Defect in the Differentiation of the Cardiac Neural Crest."

Finalists chosen for the Council on Cardiovascular Nursing New Investigator Award were Lynn V. Doering, Schools of Nursing and Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles, for "Hemodynamic Adaptation to Orthostatic Stress After Orthotopic Heart Transplantation" and Debra K. Moser (winner), the Ohio State University, Columbus, for "Is Anxiety Early After Myocardial Infarction Associated With Subsequent Ischemic and Arrhythmic Events?"

In competition for the Cournand and Comroe Young Investigator Prize in Cardiopulmonary and Critical Care, sponsored by the Council on Cardiopulmonary and Critical Care, were Daniel T. Eitzman, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, for "Bleomycin-Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis in Transgenic Mice That Either Lack or Overexpress the Murine Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor–1 Gene"; Yoshifumi Naka, Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY, for "Stimulation of the cAMP-Dependent Protein Kinase Improves Lung Preservation for Transplantation: Implications for the Mechanisms of Action of Prostaglandin E1"; Kenneth A. Roebuck, Rush-Presbyterian-St Luke's Medical Center, Chicago, Ill, for "H2O2 Activates ICAM-1 Gene Transcription Through a Novel Oxidant Response Element"; Philippe van de Borne, University of Iowa College of Medicine, Iowa City, for "Dopamine Inhibits Chemoreflex Responses to Hypoxia"; and Xiao-Jian Yuan (winner), University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, for "Nitric Oxide Hyperpolarizes Pulmonary Artery Myocytes and Decreases Cytosolic Calcium by Activating Voltage-Gated Potassium Channels."

Finalists for the Samuel A. Levine Young Clinical Investigator Award of the Council on Clinical Cardiology were Mark E. Brezinski, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, for "High-Resolution Imaging of Plaque Morphology With Optical Coherence Tomography"; Anoop Chauhan, St Mary's Hospital, London, UK for "Aging-Associated Endothelial Dysfunction in Humans is Reversed by LArginine"; Diane Fatkin (winner), St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, for "Inhibition of Red Cell Aggregation Prevents Spontaneous Echocardiographic Contrast Formation in Human Blood"; Toru Suzuki, University of Tokyo, Japan, for "A Novel Biochemical Diagnostic Method for Aortic Dissection Using an Immunoassay of Smooth Muscle Myosin Heavy Chain"; and Sanjay S. Yadav, University of Alabama at Birmingham, for "Percutaneous Treatment of Extracranial Carotid Atherosclerotic Disease With Balloon-Expandable Stent Placement."

Finalists for the Melvin L. Marcus Young Investigator Award in Cardiovascular Integrated Physiology, presented by the Council on Circulation, were Djillali Annane, R. Poincaré Hospital, Garches, France, for "Gene-Related Blunted Coronary Reserve Is an Early Component in Myotonic Dystrophy Cardiomyopathy"; John S. Ikonomidis (winner), The Toronto Hospital, Ontario, Canada, for "`Ischemic' or Adenosine Preconditioning of Human Ventricular Myocytes Is Protein Kinase C Dependent"; Samir R. Kapadia, Cleveland (Ohio) Clinic Foundation, for "Hemodynamic Regulation of Tumor Necrosis Factor-{alpha} Gene and Protein Expression in Adult Mammalian Myocardium"; Charles E. Murry, University of Washington, Seattle, for "Skeletal and Cardiac Myoblast Transplantation After Myocardial Necrosis: Possible Routes to Muscle Regeneration"; and Peipei Ping, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, for "Increased G-Protein Receptor Kinase Activity and Expression During the Development of Heart Failure."

Competing for the Irvine H. Page Arteriosclerosis Research Award for Young Investigators, sponsored by the Council on Arteriosclerosis, were Robert V. Farese, Jr, Gladstone Institute for Cardiovascular Disease, Cardiovascular Research Institute, University of California, San Francisco, with "Lack of Apolipoprotein B in the Mouse Yolk Sac Visceral Endoderm Results in Impaired Lipoprotein Synthesis and Maternal-Fetal Lipid Transport"; Alistair I. Fyfe, University of California, Los Angeles, Medical Center, with "An Interleukin-10 Recombinant Adenovirus Inhibits P-Selectin–Mediated Monocyte Adhesion to Human Aortic Endothelium"; Kamal D.
