Notice of Duplicate Publication |

Circulation 2004;108:22822289The American Heart Associations Policy on Ethical Conduct in Authorship and Publication requires that the editors of Circulation notify readers in the event of duplicate publication. We do so now with respect to an article by Barandon et al (Circulation. 2003;108:22822289), which contains data with substantial overlap of another article by Barandon et al in the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (2004;25:7683).
The article was submitted to Circulation on January 28, 2003, was accepted for publication on June 30, 2003, and appeared in the online version of Circulation on October 27, 2003. The European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery received the article on March 3, 2003, accepted it for publication on August 7, 2003, and printed the article in the January 2004 issue of their journal.
This overlap in publication was brought to our attention by a reader of both journals. The authors were given the opportunity to respond to this claim, but their response did not convince the editors of Circulation that the data in question did not overlap significantly between the articles.
The editors of Circulation wish the readers of the journal to recognize that we view duplicate publication as a serious ethical infraction. In addition to this notice, we will inform the editor of the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery and the editors of the HEART Group, a collaboration of cardiovascular journal editors, about this episode.
